Lappets and Barbes were worn at this time in all the laces. See Plate 56.
For those who could not afford the best, the llama lace shawls were procured in black or white, woven on the bobbinet Jacquard or pusher machine, the pattern afterwards outlined by hand.
A fine example of a black Chantilly shawl is illustrated in Plate 57. These black silk laces were made very much at Bayeux in France and at Grammont in Belgium. The work is of the same kind as Lille and blonde and Buckingham Point lace, made in bands about five inches wide invisibly joined.
The Spanish blonde silk pillow lace, sometimes called “Spanish silver blonde,” is illustrated in Plate 58, a mantilla. In black, Plate 59.
Then there were deep capes, Manteaux de Court, all kinds of mantillas and very large shawls occasionally with a long straight line at the top and curved at the bottom, one hundred and forty-four inches by fifty-four inches.
In black Chantilly and llama lace shapely little jackets were made, also in white Brussels lace, either point or pillow. Irish crochet was much used for these jackets, capes and coats.
At the end of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th circular berthes were very much worn and a great variety of designs were made for these collars. Plate 60 gives two examples. A Brussels Rose Point one with a pattern composed of waving bands, true-loves knots, and Queen Anne’s lace. The fillings are very fine, in the band the Enchainette and at the border the St. Esprit.
The second berthe is Venetian point with a ground, Burano lace, from the school established by Queen Marguerita.
At this time ladies wore whole dresses of lace specially made to fit by the lace-makers. There were lovely long skirts with trains with a low cut bodice to match and also one for the afternoon parties with long sleeves and sometimes a neat fitting jacket.
There is nothing more becoming than lace and many of the laces of the past can become the fashion of the day. A woman of taste and imagination can use lace in many of the old shapes and patterns with a new twist and a modern line, giving the wearer an artistic and distinguished look.
Lace should be chosen, as with a hat, to harmonize with the personality, the coloring and the height of the lady to wear it. There is a particular lace for every type and occasion; laces for day and night, laces for winter and summer and even laces for certain moods. In lace, as in letters, music and painting, discrimination is the essential thing.
